The Final Countdown – 2K9

I stood for half an hour in front of the window. When I try too hard to avoid thinking about something specific, my mind starts functioning like that of an out-of-control psychotic  So I thought of everything from Charlie Brown and rainbow-colored Rose Windows and how Princess (my doll  ) will turn 11 next week to Platonism and Mr. & Mrs. Unicorn erasers and Hemmingway and  Starbucks. Even though all that stuff was completely out of context here. But as the sun melted down like a giant burning ice-cream—by degrees, in stages, haplessly—I gave up and realized that it can take you a billion bittersweet out-of-context sunsets like these to accept that college is over.

It seems like only yesterday I was dragging my feet around the institute building every day, cribbing to Papa about the many different reasons why I shouldn’t be going to college here—the building is pink and yellow (PINK and YELLOW!) like twin scoops of ice-cream. Strawberry and mango. I hate them both     —the place is only 20 minutes from home. For the love of God, it takes longer to go to the movies!—the siren at the end of every class sounds as if a nutcase just broke away from Shutter Island  Dafuq?—I don’t want to become an Engineer.
